The MacRobert Trust conducts a programme of charitable grant giving and awards, using income from our financial investments and surplus income generated by the estate and its activities. Overall, each year, through all our areas of charitable activity, we aim to award    over £1 million.

The challenges of the CoVid pandemic have affected everyone and following our short period of closure, we are, from the 5th of April 2021, accepting applications again. Do note that during the closed period, Directors took the opportunity to review the charitable themes that the Trust will support, with a view to giving greater/renewed focus on what Lady MacRobert’s core aims and strategic intentions were – adapted, where appropriate, to fit the modern world environment. The revised themes, with brief descriptions can be found here MacRobert Themes March 2021 Detailed sub-themes have been withdrawn. Please do take time to review and consider if your application meets these new themes.

Applications are welcome from registered charities from across the United Kingdom.  Organisations must be recognised as charitable by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR), the Charity Commission for England and Wales or the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland. All award applications to the Trust must be via the online application portal. Hard copy and email applications will not be processed.  We recommend that applicants first read about the Trust’s policy areas, priorities and restrictions before applying for funding to ensure that their grant application is eligible.

All applications will be assessed and reviewed, as per the Trust’s current Charitable Policy.  If an award is made, on project completion, a final report is required. All recurring award recipients must submit a progress report and a copy of the charity’s latest accounts for each year of the project until completion. All requirements are clearly explained when an application is made.  The Directors or Executive may request a post award visit to ensure funding is being used appropriately. If an award is not made, all applicants will be advised the outcome by email. The decision of the MacRobert Trust is final and there is no appeal process.

If your application was not successful, you may be eligible to apply again after twelve months from the notification email. Please contact the Charity Manager who will advise if you may reapply.

Although there are many other areas of charitable activity, monetary awards continue to be the key charitable output for the MacRobert Trust. Please read all advice and guidance on making an application before you continue to the online portal. All information can be found here. If you have any questions or are unsure if the project/award you are applying for meets our themes, please email the Charity Manager before beginning the application process.

The largest of those ‘other areas of charitable activity’ is the Trust’s support for its Horticultural Training Scheme – details of which, along with the process on how to apply, can be found here.

Our charitable activity also includes an apprenticeship scheme which is run in conjunction with Hospitality Apprenticeship North East (HANE). The apprenticeship is designed to inspire, nurture and develop young people to give them the opportunity to shine by equipping them with a recognised qualification and skills for life.

In the 18 months of the fully accredited SVQ level 5 apprenticeship, apprentices will be based at Douneside House, where they will receive on the job training along-with core course content delivered through masterclasses and other learning methods.

Apprentices must be under the age of 25 when they start the apprenticeship.  The MacRobert Trust particularly welcomes applications from school leavers who live in the local area and are not currently in employment or further education.

Information on the scheme and how to apply can be found on the Douneside House website: or via
